It consists of a glass or plastic float that is immersed in the ammonia solution whose density is to be measured. The float is designed to have a specific density that is intermediate to that of the ammonia solution and the liquid below it. As a result, it will float at a certain level depending on the density of the solution.

To read the ammonia hydrometer, you need to take the following steps:

Step 1: Fill a clean and dry glass or plastic cylinder with the ammonia solution whose density is to be measured. Ensure that the cylinder is free from impurities and air bubbles that can affect the density measurement.

Step 2: Drop the ammonia hydrometer into the cylinder carefully. The hydrometer should be free-floating and not touching the side of the cylinder.

Step 3: Allow the hydrometer to come to rest in the ammonia solution by waiting for a few seconds for the liquid to settle. Ensure that the hydrometer is not moving or wobbling in the liquid before taking the reading.

Step 4: Read the density value at the level at which the hydrometer rests in the ammonia solution. The density reading is taken at the point where the liquid surface is at the same level as the lowest point of the meniscus that is formed by the liquid surface.

Step 5: Record the density reading in your notebook or data log. Repeat the measurement at least two more times and take the average of the readings to obtain a more accurate value.

It is important to note that temperature can affect the density of ammonia solutions. Therefore, it is advisable to measure the temperature of the liquid before taking the density measurement. Corrections for temperature can be made using published tables or formulae to obtain the true value of the density at a specific temperature.
