Introduction to RF Admittance Switch

The RF admittance level switch meter is a general-purpose level meter for continuous level measurement. The product is used in industrial and mining sites and is suitable for most applications. The instrument consists of a circuit unit, a set of explosion-proof housing, and rod or cable sensing.

Advantages of RF Admittance Switch

Versatility

RF admittance switches can be used to detect the level of various liquids, solids, powders, and granular materials. They are suitable for a wide range of applications in industries such as food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, water and wastewater, and more.

Non-Contact Sensing

RF admittance switches provide non-contact level sensing, which means they do not require physical contact with the material being measured. This makes them ideal for applications where contact sensors may be impractical or prone to contamination or damage.

Simple Installation

RF admittance switches are generally easy to install and set up. They can be mounted externally on the side of a tank or vessel, eliminating the need for complex modifications or intrusive probes. This simplifies installation and reduces maintenance requirements.

Wide Sensing Range

RF admittance switches offer a wide sensing range, allowing them to detect levels from very low to high. They can be used for both point level detection (detecting when the level reaches a specific point) and continuous level measurement.

Insensitive to Material Properties

RF admittance switches are relatively insensitive to changes in material properties such as dielectric constant, density, conductivity, or temperature. This makes them suitable for measuring a wide range of materials with varying characteristics.

Solid-State Technology

RF admittance switches utilize solid-state electronic components, which enhance their durability and reliability. They have no moving parts, reducing the risk of mechanical failures and minimizing maintenance requirements.

Application of RF Admittance Switch

RF admittance level sensor switches are utilized in a wide range of industries and applications where precise level monitoring is crucial. Some common applications include:

Capacitive liquid level sensing instrument

Liquid Storage and Processing

These switches are extensively used in industries such as chemical, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, and water treatment. They provide accurate level measurement for inventory management, process control, and preventing overflow or dry running of pumps.

These switches are suitable for liquids with varying conductivity or dielectric constants, such as oils, slurries, and emulsions. They can provide accurate level measurement even in challenging conditions, ensuring proper process control and preventing costly errors.

Working Principle of RF Admittance Switch

The RF admittance level controller is based on radio frequency (RF) capacitor technology. A radio frequency is applied to the probe and continuous analysis determines the effects caused by the surrounding environment. The energized probe and the container wall form the two pole plates of the capacitor. The insulator of the probe and the surrounding air become dielectric materials. All materials have a dielectric constant that is greater than air. When air is replaced by any other material, the capacitance effect is strengthened, which changes the impedance of the application, that is, the change in capacitance causes a change in impedance. This effect is measured by the circuit and compared with a reference established by the sensitivity setting (circuit).
The so-called radio frequency admittance means the inverse of the impedance in electricity. It is composed of resistive components, capacitive components, and inductive components, and radio frequency is the high-frequency radio spectrum. Therefore, radio frequency admittance can be understood as the use of high frequency. Radio waves measure admittance. When the meter is working, the sensor of the meter forms an admittance value with the filling wall and the measured medium. When the material level changes, the admittance value changes accordingly, and the circuit unit converts the measured admittance value into a level signal output to realize the level measurement.

Installation Tips for RF Admittance Switch

The installation position of the sensing element (probe) is usually determined by the position of the opening of the container, but it should not be installed in the feed stream. When there is no suitable position inside the container, consider using the outside arm or graduated cylinder installation. When the sensor is installed on the side wall, the protective electrode should enter the container and hang through the side wall, so please pay attention to the length of the protective electrode when selecting the type. In order to make the device work properly and accurately, please install it according to the following steps:
● In the case of insulating sensors, the installation must be very careful, because in this case, it is possible to damage the insulation of the probe, especially the thin capacitive probe.
● The sensing element should not be installed so that it is in the direct flow of material from the filling nozzle or tank. If this is not possible, add a baffle between the probe and the fill.
● Do not disassemble the sensor or loosen the mounting seal.
● Tighten the sensing element with the flat part of the wrench.
● The shielding layer must pass through the tank wall when the probe is installed.

Notice:
Do not use one-component ambient vulcanized sealants for probes or instrument enclosures, which often contain acetic acid, which will corrode circuit components. A special two-component sealant (non-corrosive) should be used, please consult the manufacturer on which two-component sealant to use.

Ultimate FAQ Guide to RF Admittance Switch

Q: How does the RF level switch work?

A: The signal provided to the shield section is maintained constant by use of a compensating circuit in the Electronic Controller while the signal applied to the active section varies with the change of media between the probe and the vessel shell.

Q: What is the RF level measurement?

A: RF level switches are used to measure the level of a liquid or bulk solid material (as well as slurries) within a specified space. They are designed to measure point level readings. Point level switches provide output when a specific level measurement is reached.

Q: What is the difference between a level switch and a level transmitter?

A: A level transmitter is perfect for a condition where the exact level of fluid needs to be measured. This is usually preferred for applications where precise measurement becomes a necessity. A level switch is an ideal choice for applications where extremely low or high levels need to be measured.

Q: How do RF capacitance level sensors work?

A: Capacitance is formed between the level sensing probe and metallic wall of the vessel which act as two electrodes, and the application media acts as a dielectric medium when the sensor is introduced into the vessel. These electrodes are separated by an insulator by suitable media like solid and liquid known as a dielectric medium. The dielectric is the main factor in the capacitance principle as its value will be influenced by the temperature and moisture content of the operating material. When the level of process material rises, the value of dielectric changes which results in a change in the value of capacitance between the level sensing probe and the vessel wall. This change can be detected and measured by the Radio Frequency technique. These RF signals are interpreted by the evaluation unit and it converts these signals into a relay output signals. RF current flowing in the capacitor helps the electronics detect the presence of application media.

Q: What are the advantages of RF admittance?

A: High Cost-Effectiveness
The strong functionality and relatively low price of the product make it more cost-effective compared to similar instruments and meters
Minimal Measurement Error
Due to the fact that the radio frequency admittance level switch is not affected by hanging materials and environmental changes, its measurement results are more accurate. Moreover, the components of the radio frequency admittance level switch have no moving parts during the measurement process, so there is no mechanical damage. This makes the radio frequency admittance level switch unnecessary for regular maintenance, high accuracy, and long service life.
Wide Universality
The radio frequency admittance material level switch can withstand high temperature, corrosion, explosion-proof, anti hanging, material impact, friction, and is easy to maintain. This product is widely used in the measurement of coal ash, solid particles, and adhesive materials in petrochemical industry, power plant dust removal and ash hopper, storage bin, and measurement of coal ash.

Q: What is the difference between a float switch and a level switch?

A: A float switch is a device that uses a float, which rises and falls with the level of liquid, to activate a switch. The switch can be used to turn a pump on or off, for example. A level switch, on the other hand, uses a probe that is inserted into the liquid to detect the level of the liquid.

Q: What is the RF admittance level switch sensor sensitivity?

A: The correct sensitivity setting will affect the correct change of the sensor output. The anti-adhesion circuit of the probe can make the measurement circuit ignore the material accumulated on the probe, otherwise it will cause the failure of sensitivity. The anti-stick circuit is excited with the same radio frequency potential as applied to the sensing probe. Because the current cannot flow at the same potential, the anti-adhesion circuit blocks the current that usually flows from the energized probe through the accumulated material to the container wall. This measures the material surrounding the energized probe, not the accumulated material.

Q: What are the benefits of RF admittance level sensor switches?

A: Versatility
RF admittance level sensor switches are versatile and can be used for both liquids and solids. They can handle various materials with different electrical properties, making them suitable for diverse industrial applications.
Non-Intrusive Installation
These switches can be installed externally or inserted into the container, depending on the application requirements. Non-intrusive installation allows for easy retrofitting and minimizes the risk of contamination or damage to the material being measured.
